6 Reviews of the Croyde 8

We purchased this tent as a package including footprint, vestibule and carpet after viewing it at the NEC in Februrary, as it seemed to tick all our boxes for a tent for a family of 5. It is spacious, and with the added vestibule the front porch is a good size for a table and chairs. We used it for a fortnight's holidy in Cornwall with all the bedrooms and had sufficient space for everything.

It is very easy to erect and goes up in around 30 mins (including pegging out guys) with two people. As to be expected, it is very heavy but the bag provided is spacious. The option of storm straps is very reassuring. As with all tents, the pegs are flimsy and we used our own.

However, I have marked it down as our tent leaked in heavy rain. Not significant amounts but the water wicked through every single curtain hanging point. This was resolved with seam sealant but was a big disappointment. The side porch pole will not sit right and as a result we had pools of rain water in the canopy. The carpet is also of a lesser quality than any of our previous tents, the threads pull very easily and it is very thin.

Overall, I'm happy with our tent and won't rush to replace it.

Wow! this tent is absolutely awesome! I originally thought I'd struggle with getting it up but a couple of practise runs and it's easier than putting up my old 12 man dome tent.

Took it for a spin for a weekend - rained when we got there but still went up easier than the proverbial ferret up a drain pipe. The rain just ran off it (even in its pre-erect state) and it drys off really quickly too.

I would highly recommend buying the vestibule and carpet if you are able as this provided us with a) a 'wet room' and b) added warmth.

The pods are very spacious and adaptable and the cable entry points (2, one either side) are very well placed.

The storm/rain door worked perfectly but it's a shame it's only on one side (possible upgrade to consider Kampa?????)

We are looking forward to using this tent at every opportunity as its build quality appears to be second to none. Highly recommended

I cannot recommend this tent enough. I've had about 3 weeks of use out of it since buying it last year. It accommodates me my wife, three children and two dogs comfortably

It's been tested in all weather conditions including a week of non stop rain in Devon the tent did not let any water in though we did have a footprint groundsheet which I was glad about when I saw the mud pool that had formed under our tent during the week.

Once you've done it once or twice it easy to pitch with two people and once up it feels sturdy. My only advice is if you do buy one check the pitch sizes at the campsite when your looking as it's a very large tent and some of the sites cannot accommodate it or charge a bit extra for the larger pitch.

After returning from my second outing with this tent I have to say I'm considering selling my house and moving into it, my girlfriend and myself love it. Very easy to put up with 2 people, we managed it in a thunderstorm with a hyperactive puppy in 45 mins with just the 2 of us! The inside space is massive and the large windows are perfect for letting light in and letting us look at the scenery around us.

If you are thinking about buying this tent I say go for it!

After a few test pitches I've just got back from a week in this tent, of which most days consisted of heavy rain and battering from the wind.

It's easy for two people to erect but once the poles are up and the groundsheet pegged out one person can do the rest whilst the second does the inner etc. Without much practice it took the two of us about an hour to get the tent up and guyed, inners attached and most of the camping furniture inside. One word of warning - follow the instructions. I winged it on a test pitch, adding all the poles and then trying to stand it up. The weight of all the poles caused the one I was lifting to snap - fortunately I was able to find a camping shop with a spare pole nearby. My mistake, not Kampa's.

Space wise. It's huge. We planned to use it for two adults and one kid and just leave out the front bedroom for the extra room, but on the last trip another family member joined us so we took the front bedroom. Even with that in there was more than enough room for 3 adults and 1 child to live comfortably with no squeezing past etc required. 8 adults would be pushing it a bit - they'd fit, but personally I'd say 5 adults or 2 adults and 4 kids would be the limit. But it's a big tent and positively palatial for your typical family. And I wouldn't feel greedy if it was just for two adults - no harm in having the extra space.

Inside it's a light tent which is helped by full length windows with roll down covers on every section except the back bedrooms. Venting is more than sufficient with two at the back end (one adjustable by zip from outside), one at the front end and the two side doors (one with storm porch) have mossie netting, and of course the main door at the front end (whilst not having netting) can open the entire width of the tent so when the sun comes out it's easy to stay cool. There are the usual touches inside - storage pockets, cable access and hanging points etc. And the back bedrooms can be turned into one big bedroom if need be - the sides zip up and get held in place with hook and loop.

I've had my last tent collapse in heavy wind so if the Croyde couldn't survive a blow it was going to go straight on eBay - weather resistance was the most important thing for me. Before leaving I added two Storm Tie Down Kit's and a mixture of rock pegs and XL spikes so that I didn't have to use the candy cane ones supplied. The wind was regularly gusting from 25-35mph and the rain hammered down throughout. It was unnerving, but after two days I realised the tent wasn't going anywhere - it really seemed bombproof, and I've got complete confidence in it now. And the groundsheet didn't let any water in despite the surrounding ground turning into a bog - a heavy duty tarp used as a footprint may have helped on that front though.

The enclosed porch by the front entrance was a real game changer for me - there was room to dump a water carrier, bin bag, muddy boots, pushchair etc out of the rain and kept the inside clean. And there was still room to put up a table for a couple of camping stoves etc - it was raining almost every time I came to cook and everything was kept dry and out of the rain. I'm quite surprised that another reviewer mentioned cooking inside - the porch was well out of the weather and roomy enough to cook in.

If I had to find something to criticise, I'd say there could be a couple more hanging points inside for lanterns and when the tent it strongly guyed for bad weather the side doors can be tricky to zip and unzip - so I just used the main door (which was pitched to be out of the weather anyway) and in more mild weather loosening the guys would have solved that. And it weighs a ton packed up - the pole bag is backbreaking, if I was camping far from the car I'd have to get some sort of trolley to transport it.

If you want a big, spacious, light, strong and weather resistant metal poled tunnel tent the Croyde 8 is excellent. Chuck in a couple of Storm Tie Down Kit's and upgrade the pegs and the tent is good to face a typical British summer.

Easy to pitch for 2 people ,very large we only used the large bedroom and fit the 7 of us with 2 large double airbeds and 2 full size travel cots I also bought the footprint and carpet and am delighted I did as we were in heavy rain and packed up in the rain very happy with my purchase only downside was the condensation but think that was my own fault for cooking inside :)

Manufacturer's Description

The Kampa Croyde 8 is a brand new tent for 2013 with diferent colourway to previous years also ! The Croyde 8 is a "tunnel" style tent which most people find easier to put up than the "dome" tents, also to make this tent even easier to erect is the fact that all the main pieces of frame are the exact from front to back. The tent has plenty of windows in to allow as much light in as you like but also has blinds in at night time for some privacy. The bedroom configuration is one main bedroom to the rear of the tent which is a 6 birth with two dividing curtains to make it three 2 births and one optional two birth at the front of the tent which if not in use will give you an even larger living area.

Key Features:

Sewn in groundsheet throughout main living room
Built-in front canopy
Side door with wet weather protection
Variable position roll to side front door
Two side doors with mesh panels
